In short: the church of St Michael the Archangel in Dębno Podhalańskie was built in the second half of the 15th century from larch wood, in log construction. The tower dates from 1601. The church is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the wooden churches of southern Lesser Poland.
From the outside it looks modest: dark shingles, steep roofs, a low silhouette nestled among the trees. Only when you cross the threshold do you understand why people come here from all over the world. A patterned polychrome covers the walls and ceiling, and in the half-light the wood smells of a history older than the discovery of America.
Five hundred years in larch
The church was built in the second half of the 15th century. The carpenters used larch wood and the log technique: beams were laid horizontally and joined at the corners, creating walls like giant building blocks. The tower was added in 1601.
The interior is decorated with stencil polychrome, that is, painted using templates. Repeating floral, geometric and figural motifs cover almost every surface. This is one of the reasons the church is so highly valued by art historians.
Why UNESCO
The church in Dębno was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with other wooden churches of southern Lesser Poland. It also belongs to the Wooden Architecture Trail, which leads through the most valuable wooden monuments of the region.
Tips for visitors
- It is a working church. Visits take place outside services, at set hours. Check them before you travel.
- Dress appropriately. Shoulders and knees covered, especially in summer.
- Respect the monument. The wood and polychromes are delicate, so it is worth checking the rules on photographs and touching the furnishings on site.
- Plan a short visit. The visit itself usually takes a few dozen minutes.
What next after Dębno
Dębno lies near Lake Czorsztyn, so it is easy to combine with a visit to the castle in Niedzica or the ruins of the castle in Czorsztyn. It also works well as a stop on the way back, as we write in the winter weekend plan.

Wooden heritage in Białka itself
You do not have to travel far to see an old wooden church. In Białka Tatrzańska stands a wooden church consecrated in 1765. The new, brick church of the parish of St Simon and St Jude Thaddeus was built in 1921. It is a good goal for a short walk from Willa pod Smrekiem.
