Morskie Oko from Białka: a practical guide (parking, route, time)

Morskie Oko w Tatrach

In short: you walk to Morskie Oko from Palenica Białczańska, close to Białka. The route is about 9 km one way along an asphalt road. Plan 5 to 6 hours for the whole trip. The car park at Palenica holds about 850 cars and must be booked in advance electronically with the Tatra National Park.

The last bend of the road, the trees part and suddenly a sheet of water surrounded by granite walls opens before you. Mnich, Rysy, the Mięguszowieckie peaks. You have seen Morskie Oko in hundreds of photos, yet in person it still takes your breath away. Staying in Białka, you have one of the shortest journeys to it in the whole of Podhale.

Key facts

  • Morskie Oko lies at an altitude of 1,395 m above sea level,
  • it covers 34.93 ha and is one of the largest lakes in the Tatras,
  • its depth reaches about 51 metres,
  • the trail starts at Palenica Białczańska, the busiest entrance to the Tatra National Park.

Step 1: parking at Palenica Białczańska

The car park at Palenica holds about 850 cars, and spaces are booked electronically through the Tatra National Park system. In season and at weekends, book ahead. Without a booking you risk losing an hour in the morning looking for another solution. Entry to the park is paid, and you can buy a ticket online or at the ticket office. Current rules are on the TPN website.

Step 2: the route to the lake

From Palenica an asphalt road about 9 km long leads to the lake. It rises gently, so families with children and people without mountain experience can manage it too. Comfortable shoes, water and something warm to put on are enough, because it can be noticeably colder by the lake than down below.

On the way you pass the Mickiewicz Waterfalls, cascades on the Roztoka stream. It is a good place for a first stop and a photo.

Step 3: Czarny Staw below Rysy, if you have the energy

From Morskie Oko the trail leads higher, to Czarny Staw below Rysy. The climb takes about 45 minutes and is clearly steeper than the road from Palenica. The reward is a view of Morskie Oko from above and the dark surface of the tarn at the foot of Rysy.

How much time to plan

For the walk to the lake and back alone, allow 5 to 6 hours including rest. For the climb to Czarny Staw add about an hour and a half. Set off early: it is cooler and quieter in the morning, and it is easier to find a space in the car park.

Useful tips

  • check the forecast and TPN announcements, because the weather in the Tatras changes quickly,
  • take a rain jacket and a warm layer even in summer,
  • in winter the road can be icy, and above Morskie Oko winter equipment and experience are required,
  • leave nothing in the mountains but footprints.

An evening after Morskie Oko

After a dozen or so kilometres of walking, nothing tastes better than a warm bath. At Terma Bania, 1.5 km from Willa pod Smrekiem, your legs will rest in water at 34 to 38 degrees. Or stay in the garden by the grill. Check available dates and plan your day in the Tatras.
